About Uranium
From 1944 to 1986, 30 million tons of uranium ore was extracted from Navajo lands by the US government to make nuclear weapons. Today, 523 abandoned uranium mines (AUMs) have yet to be cleaned up and properly closed. Navajo people have been diagnosed with cancer and other illnesses linked to uranium exposure. The attached report and testimony provide further detail on uranium on the Navajo Nation and its impact on the Navajo land and people.
About The Cancer Center
In 2019 the Tuba City Regional Health Care Corporation in Tuba City, Arizona on the Navajo Nation opened the first-ever cancer center on Native land in the US. Joined by Dr. Jill Biden, Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez, and leadership from the hospital, the cancer center marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Navajo people.
Since the center opened, hundreds of patients have received culturally-adapted care closer to home from a dedicated team of health care professionals who know the community and are committed to the best care for Native American patients and their families.
